NEW RELEASE - FISHERMAN'S RETREAT EDITION 6.1
Edition 6.1 was brought to life by master distiller Jim McEwan on 23rd May 2007, distilled at Bruichladdich distillery and left to mature for over 12 years in a Rivesaltes cask in Bruichladdich’s warehouses overlooking the beautiful Loch Indaal.
At just over 12 years old the spirit was split and 249 bottles of Edition 6 were produced, the remaining 100 litres filled an ex-fortified wine cask from Yalumba winery in the Barossa Valley, South Australia.
18 months later the relationship of cask and spirit has been a match made in heaven resulting in a truly exceptional dram!
Edition 6.1 Tasting Notes by Jim McEwan
Rivesaltes (12.5 Years)
Finished in Yalumba Fortified Wine (18 Months)
Really beautiful burnished amber tone
Rich and assertive with that unique DNA of Islays’ association with the Atlantic Ocean which lifts the spirit and brings balance to both the aroma and flavours.
Opens beautifully on notes of crisp sweet barley and oak tannins, then the rich plump aromas of the grapes evolve, disarming, inviting and bringing fruit overtures to the senses. The richness of the grapes, succulent and sweet underpinning the quality of the Islay barley and the mellowness of the oak.
At 14 years of age the spirit is robust and full of passion as one would expect from this young Islander. You can detect the marine influence which gives a light hint of lemon and grapefruit and brings a beautiful contrast to the red fruit notes of the wine casks. Their coming together is brilliant and very rare. The palate is in Heaven never before having experienced such a combination of flavours.
The fruitiness of the semi dried grapes is the perfect foil for the marine influence of the Sea. The cereal sweet Islay barley in harmony with the oaks ensures that the most elegant of Islays’ amazing spirit has gone where no dram has gone before.
It’s warm, smooth and mellow, just like the guy who made it!
